Located between the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and the lush waterways of the World Heritage Greater Saint Lucia Wetland Park, Phinda's 23 000 hectares span seven unique ecosystems. Nestled below the Lebombo Mountains of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Phinda is a Zulu word meaning "the return". In one of the biggest reintroductions of game in Africa, Phinda was restocked with lion, rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard, giraffe and other big game in an operation dubbed "phinda izilwane", return of the wild animals.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated in one of Africa's most ecologically diverse regions, and borders on the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. The flagship of CC Africa's conservation efforts, it began as a dream 10 years ago and since become a model for ecotourism the world over. From farmlands, 15 000 hectares were lovingly restored. The seven different eco-systems on the reserve were then re-stocked with game. The whole endeavor vastly improved employment, educational and health levels in the surrounding rural villages.
Four splendid lodges, with Small Luxury Hotels of the World endorsement - Mountain Lodge (20 chalets and conference facilities), Forest Lodge (16), Vlei Lodge (6) and Rock Lodge (6) - now provide a base from which guests can experience a host of adventure activities in addition to game viewing, from rhino-tracking on foot to horse riding and canoeing, from watching turtles lay their eggs on a remote beach to diving off the area's coral reefs. Literally hand built by Zulu people to minimize impact on the rare Sand Forest, these 16 stilted glass chalets float between the forest floor and the towering torchwood trees. Within these unique habitats no luxury has been overlooked, from beechwood and slate floors, to air-conditioning and hand towels tied with fresh leaf wreaths.
At the Forest Lodge the walls have become windows opening up to the canopy beyond. Outside, the forest is alive with creatures, from the tiny red duiker and suni antelope to the narina trogon and rare red squirrel. Your private chalet beckons beckons the forest within, and you may even see elephants ambling past.
VLEI LODGE
The elegant and exclusive Phinda Vlei Lodge's stilted suites of thatch, teak and glass overlook Phinda's unique wetland system at the edge of the forest - a favorite roaming ground of cheetah.
Each suite boasts a large airy double bedroom with spacious en-suite bathroom, private plunge pool and outdoor deck, ideal for bird and game watching. And with the sinking sun still warm on your shoulders, treat yourself to a romantic private dinner on your deck, lit by the gentle glow of oil lamps and the serenade of cicadas.

MOUNTAIN LODGE
Here at the top of a lavish bushveld world, savour the panoramas of the Ubombo Mountains, an ash-blue backdrop to the Lake St. Lucia coastal plains.
Mountain Lodge is a sophisticated harmony of avante garde and ethnic decor, superb cuisine and warm, personalized service. The grand sweep of the horizon is burnished with the sinking sun, flooding the lodge with golden light as guests descend the hills for their evening game drive or river cruise. Later, they enjoy the drama of dining in Mountain Lodge's spectacularly theatrical boma (open-air dining area walled with reed and stone.

ROCK LODGE
In the south of the reserve you will discover the exclusive Phinda Rock Lodge. Its roughly-hewn stone and adobe walls and ochre-packed wooden roofs are built into the rock face overlooking the magnificent Leopard Rock. Each of the six suites, garlanded with twisting vegetation and suspended off the edge of the rocky cliff, has a large bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, some leading to an outdoor shower for bush bathing with an unrivalled view. Suites, decorated in subtle ethnic moods, also have their own private lounge, deck and plunge pool.
Dinner at Phinda Rock is an unforgettable affair - a pan African banquet spreads itself beneath the scampering celestial light of uniquely hand-wrought chandeliers as the eagles tumble and swoop at eye-level in the gathering twilight.
